ABOUT US

Where the natural borders of Europe end, and East meets West, rise the dark mountains of the Caucasus, a land surrounded by legends and deep traditions, where the past refuses to disappear.

Georgian polyphonic singing is one of the most recognized worldwide for its great versatility and uniqueness, thanks to the diversity of singing styles of the different Georgian communities. It was declared an Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2001 and was included in the “Voyager 1” space probe’s golden record.

Folk songs occupy a fundamental place in Georgian culture. Some of these songs date back to the 8th century and were sung in all aspects of social life, from farm work, various celebrations and ceremonies, to Orthodox liturgical hymns.

Vocal Vircan is an a cappella vocal group of eight singers based in Catalonia, half of whom are of Georgian origin and the other half of Catalan origin. Some members also play traditional Georgian instruments (panduri, chonduri) on some songs, as well as guitar and piano.

The group has developed a wide repertoire that includes liturgical chants, urban, folk, and root songs from different regions of Georgia (such as Svaneti, Kakheti, Samegrelo, etc.), representing a wide musical and timbral variety.

The group was founded in 2020 and has been recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Georgian government, inviting them to sing at the Georgian diaspora event in December 2021 in Tbilisi (the capital of Georgia). In 2022, Vocal Vircan released its first album, recorded live from a single concert in Barcelona.
